How to Choose a Newborn Photographer in Mankato, MN | Jennifer Brandes Photography

Choosing a newborn photographer in Mankato, MN is one of the most meaningful decisions you’ll make in those busy, beautiful weeks before your baby arrives.

It’s also one of the most overwhelming.

A quick Google search returns dozens of options — different styles, different price points, different levels of experience. And when you’re navigating pregnancy, a nursery that isn’t finished, and approximately seventeen other things on your to-do list, knowing where to even start can feel like too much.

I’m Jennifer Brandes — a newborn photographer near Mankato, Minnesota based just outside of New Ulm, serving families across Mankato and South Central Minnesota. I’ve been photographing newborns since 2010, and in that time I’ve learned exactly what separates a truly exceptional newborn photography experience from one that looks good on Instagram but falls short in person.

This post is my honest guide to choosing the right photographer for your family — whether that ends up being me or someone else entirely. Because getting this decision right matters far more than who gets the booking.

Start With Safety — It’s Non-Negotiable

Before you look at a single portfolio image, ask about safety.

Newborn photography involves posing a days-old baby in positions that require specific training to execute safely. What looks effortless in a finished photograph often involves carefully supported composite posing — meaning what appears to be one image is actually several images combined in editing, because no baby’s neck or spine is strong enough to hold that position unassisted.

A photographer who hasn’t been formally trained in newborn safety posing is taking risks with your baby that most parents don’t even know to ask about.

Here’s what to look for:

Formal safety training. Ask directly: have you completed a newborn safety and posing course? This isn’t a certification that comes with a photography degree — it’s specialized training that photographers pursue intentionally. If they can’t name their training, that’s a meaningful data point.

CPR certification. Accidents are rare — but a photographer who works with newborns should be prepared for them. Ask whether they’re CPR certified, and whether that certification covers infants specifically. I’m CPR certified for both adults and infants, and I renew that certification because I take it seriously.

Years of experience with newborns specifically. General photography experience doesn’t automatically translate to newborn expertise. Ask how long they’ve been specializing in newborns — not just how long they’ve been a photographer.

Look at Their Portfolio With Fresh Eyes

Once you’re satisfied with the safety conversation, look at their work — but look carefully.

A beautiful newborn image is easy to achieve once. Consistency across dozens of sessions tells a different story.

When reviewing a portfolio, ask yourself:

  • Do the images look consistent in quality, or do some look significantly better than others?
  • Do the poses look natural and peaceful, or do babies appear stiff or uncomfortable?
  • Is the lighting consistent and intentional, or does it vary dramatically session to session?
  • Do the color tones feel timeless and warm, or trendy in a way that might feel dated in ten years?
  • Are there images of parents and siblings, or only posed baby shots? A photographer who captures genuine family connection — not just technically perfect baby poses — is a photographer who understands what newborn photography is really for.

Also look at how recently the portfolio images were taken. A portfolio full of work from five years ago tells you less about who this photographer is today than recent sessions do.

Understand the Studio Environment

Where your session takes place matters more than most parents realize.

A purpose-built newborn studio is a fundamentally different environment than a spare bedroom or a rented commercial space. Here’s what to look for — and what to ask:

Temperature. Newborns need a warm environment to relax into deep sleep — the kind of sleepy, curled-up state that allows for the most beautiful posing. A studio that can’t maintain warmth will result in a fussy, unsettled baby and a longer, more stressful session. It’s also ok to ask what temperature the studio is kept at during newborn sessions.

Privacy. Your newborn session is an intimate experience. A private studio — not a shared commercial space with foot traffic — allows you to relax, feed your baby, and simply be present without feeling like you’re on display.

Amenities for parents. You’ve just had a baby. You’re exhausted, possibly still recovering, and navigating the completely new experience of new parenthood. A studio designed with you in mind — comfortable seating, a rocking chair, a restroom stocked with postpartum essentials, a warm beverage waiting when you arrive — tells you something important about how this photographer thinks about your experience.

Props and wardrobe. Ask what’s provided. A well-stocked studio means you don’t need to source wraps, bonnets, outfits, or props before your session. It also means the photographer has invested in their craft and their clients’ experience.

My New Ulm studio was designed from the ground up for new families. It’s private, rural, and warm — with a full client wardrobe, a complimentary beverage and snack bar, comfortable seating, a rocking chair, and a restroom stocked with postpartum essentials for new moms. Everything is taken care of before you arrive, so you can simply show up and be present with your baby.

Ask About Their Process — Before and After

The session itself is only one part of the experience. A truly exceptional photographer has a clear, supported process from your first inquiry all the way through gallery delivery.

Questions worth asking:

How do you prepare clients before the session? Look for a photographer who sends a detailed prep guide, communicates wardrobe recommendations, and reaches out personally before your session day. This level of preparation tells you they care about the outcome as much as you do.

How do you handle the unexpected? Newborns don’t follow schedules. Babies need to feed, be settled, and sometimes just held. Ask how the photographer handles a fussy baby or a session that runs long. The answer tells you everything about their patience and their priorities.

What happens after the session? How long until you see your images? How are they delivered? What are your options for products and prints? A photographer who has clear, professional answers to these questions has built a real business — not a hobby with a camera.

How do you handle rescheduling? Life with a newborn is unpredictable. A fair, human rescheduling policy matters.

At Jennifer Brandes Photography, every client receives a personalized session consultation before their session, a complete prep guide with wardrobe guidance, and a personal phone call the week of their session. Galleries are delivered within two weeks — often within five to seven days.

Consider Their Pricing Honestly

Newborn photography pricing varies widely — and the range can feel confusing when you’re trying to make a decision.

Here’s the honest truth: professional newborn photography is an investment. The photographers who have completed formal safety training, invested in a purpose-built studio, built a curated product lineup, and dedicated themselves to this specialty for years charge accordingly — and for good reason.

That doesn’t mean the most expensive photographer is automatically the best fit. But it does mean that significantly below-market pricing is worth questioning. Ask what’s included. Ask about their training. Ask to see consistent portfolio work.

The right photographer for your family is the one whose work moves you, whose process makes you feel cared for, and whose pricing reflects genuine expertise and investment in your experience.

A note on session fees: at Jennifer Brandes Photography, the session fee covers your spot on the calendar, the pre-session preparation work, and your complete studio experience. It is not a deposit toward your collection purchase — that decision happens after your gallery is delivered, once you’ve seen your images and know exactly what you love.

Think About the Long View

Your newborn session may feel like a one-time event — but the best newborn photographers think about your family’s story beyond a single session.

Ask whether your photographer offers milestone sessions, family sessions, or a membership program for documenting your baby’s first year. Continuity matters. A photographer who already knows your baby, your preferences, and your family’s story will create more connected, cohesive images at every stage than a different photographer would.

The First Year Storybook at Jennifer Brandes Photography was created specifically for families who want one trusted photographer at every stage of their baby’s first year — from newborn through the 6-month milestone and first birthday. If you’re already thinking about those moments while you’re still expecting, The First Year Storybook is worth reading before you book your newborn session.

The drive is a small part of the decision. What they find on the other side is a studio that was built entirely around them — private, warm, unhurried, and prepared for every need.
