Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most emotional, awe-filled milestones — and capturing those delicate first days is truly priceless. As a professional newborn photographer based in Southern Minnesota, I’ve spent years perfecting safe, gentle posing that highlights every tiny detail, while making sure your baby is completely comfortable throughout the session.

If you’re curious what goes into a newborn session or wondering which poses you’ll love most, here’s a look at five client-favorite newborn poses — and why they matter

1. The Froggy Pose

Why Parents Love It: This pose shows off baby’s adorable face while highlighting their tiny hands and curled-up legs in a unique and whimsical way. It’s often a favorite for canvas prints or birth announcements.

Safety First: This pose is always done as a composite image, meaning I take multiple shots with hands safely supporting the baby’s head and wrists, and then blend them together in Photoshop. Your baby’s airway, neck, and body alignment are my top priority at all times.

2. Bum Up Pose (Tushy Up)

Why Parents Love It: This pose captures baby’s perfect profile, back rolls, and squishy little legs all at once. It’s one of the most natural, womb-like positions and always gets a smile from new parents.

Safety First: Baby is gently positioned on a padded posing surface that’s warm and temperature-regulated to stay cozy. I’m always right next to your baby, monitoring for any signs of discomfort or movement.

3. Side-Lying Pose

Why Parents Love It: Simple, peaceful, and timeless — this pose gives a soft, relaxed look that works beautifully in both color and black-and-white edits. It’s also one of the most natural for baby.

Safety First: I use a combination of posing beans to support baby’s head and spine, ensuring gentle neck alignment. This pose is great for newborns who are more alert or want to stretch out.

4. Head on Hands Pose

Why Parents Love It: This sweet pose focuses attention on baby’s face and hands while keeping their little legs tucked in naturally. Parents love the calm, serene expression it often brings out.

Safety First: As with all table poses, I carefully position your baby using soft props and continuous support. Baby will never be forced into a pose — if he/she isn’t comfortable, we adjust or move on.

5. Swaddled Prop Pose (in a Bucket or Bowl)

Why Parents Love It: Swaddling keeps babies snug and secure, making it easier to photograph them in adorable props like buckets, crates, or bowls. With your choice of colors and textures, this is one of the most personalized poses in a session.

Safety First: Buckets and props are always weighed or padded for stability, and I’m within arm’s reach at all times. Your baby’s chin and breathing are never obstructed, and I follow baby’s cues every step of the way. My studio props are only sourced from highly proclaimed and trusted newborn prop vendors.
